2015 Shoreline Superlatives

Our list of our favorite sailing things from the past year…

2015 Best Sailing Video – E Scow Nationals Documentary – Lots of great candidates here. Volvo Ocean Race and foiling boats abound. For our money, though, this video of Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club’s 2015 E Scow Nationals by Peter Slack (Youtube channel) is our favorite:

2015 Best Place to Sail Great Sodus Bay –  No place on Lake Ontario compares with Sodus Bay. SBYC hosted the 2015 LYRA Regatta. They are always great hosts, and the sailing was fantastic, too!

2015 Best Piece of Legislation – Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015 – Best law of 2015? You better believe it! Sailors love the water and are concerned about its health. HR-1321 was signed into law by President Obama on December 28, 2015. The Microbead-Free Waters Act, introduced by Reps. Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) and Fred Upton (R-Mich.), is an important step toward addressing the global crisis of microplastic pollution. Plastic microbeads — designed to be washed down the drain and too small to be reliably captured by wastewater treatment facilities — pollute lakes, rivers and oceans. One tube of exfoliating facewash can contain more than 350,000 microbeads, and it’s estimated that 2.9 trillion microbeads enter U.S. waterways annually. The law will ban all products with microbeads by 2019.

2015 Best Sailboat Promotional Video – Melges 14 – Honorable mention goes to the outstanding videos produced by Laser Performance for the Sunfish, Bug, and Bahia. See them here. That being said… this video by Melges of their Boat of the Year Award winning 14, captures the imagination and makes the viewer wish… just wish.

2015 Best Sailing News Site – Scuttlebutt Sailing News – A day would not be complete without a visit to Scuttlebutt! Since 1997, Craig Leweck and Scuttlebutt have provided sailing news with a focus on North America. Each day you can find the most up-to-date stories posted on the website, with the highlights distributed Monday through Friday in the e-newsletter. We had the opportunity to interview Craig a few years back. You can read it here.

2015 Best Innovators in the Industry – Dynamic Dollies – Chris Souza and Ben Spiller, co-founders of Dynamic Dollies of Portsmouth, RI, have not been content to build the same old dollies. Recent innovations have included a dolly that can be used to help a novice learn how to sail an Optimist in a parking lot, a tow-behind dolly attachment for a bike, and a dolly that can hold an Optimist equally well upside down and right side up, among others. We are very excited about our new one-of-a-kind rack that Dynamic custom built for us. It can hold 8 Sunfish, Lasers, or similar boats. It’s designed like a kayak rack and you can extract the boats from the side rather than only the ends. We are ready to fill it up with new boats in the Spring of 2016.
