Building on Success – Olcott YC Junior Sailing

Olcott Yacht Club uses the US Sailing format that effectively offers several years of developmental skills in, sailing, theory, timing, balance, racing and seamanship.  Classes are kept small with a student to teacher ratio of less than ten to one.

Several levels of instruction are taught with an emphasis on safety, fun, sportsmanship, cooperation and competition.  In 2006 OYC’s advanced racing team was undefeated in several local regattas, and won the gold medal at the Rochester Junior Olympics Regatta.  In 2009 OYC again won gold at the Junior Olympics.

The 420 program is open to boys and girls ages 9 to 18.  It runs six weeks during the summer, Monday through Friday, on the water, from 10 A.M. till 3 P.M.  The Opti program, begun in 2007, will accept younger sailors (age 7) and will follow the same schedule.

Acceptance into the program is on a first come/first served basis and is open to the public and membership alike.  Enrollment is growing; OYC has had a participation increase of 40% over the past two season.  As a result the program has established a deadline date for applications of June 21, 2013.  Be sure to apply early!

Program History:
Junior Sailing began at Olcott Yacht Club in the 1940’s with the OYC “Tiller Jockeys” sailing on prams and Snipes in that era, and graduating to C&C Nutshells in the 1970’s. The program acquired a fleet of eight JY15 Juniors in the late 1980’s and early 90’s. In 2004, OYC acquired a fleet of 7 420s from Yale University. In 2007, the 420 fleet was expanded to ten boats. In 2010, the 420 fleet grew to fourteen, and the Optimist fleet expanded to seven boats.
